Apple’s system would use various sensors to gather information on the external environment to create a three-dimensional image of the vehicle’s surroundings. Data from a variety of cameras, including infrared, ultrasonic, visible light, and light-based scanning devices would also assist in the image creations.

Apple’s technology appears to rely on geographical positioning and radar devices to develop the three-dimensional imagery. The patent filing left out details on how the technology would practically function.
